About

Two decades of senior IT — told plainly.

I'm a Melbourne-based consultant working with organisations that need the quality of a Tier-1 firm but the accountability of a single person. This is who I am, how I got here, and how I think about the work.

My story

I didn't set out to start a consultancy. I set out to do the work properly.

I spent the first fifteen years of my career inside federal agencies, major Australian banks, and national telecommunications companies — the kind of environments where a single program can employ hundreds of people and still struggle to describe what it's actually building.

Along the way I learned Agile, Scrum, PMP, SAFe, ITIL. I ran programs that worked. I was called in to ones that didn't. I watched very capable people get crushed by governance models that nobody would have designed on purpose.

What became clear over time is that the problem was almost never the methodology. The problem was that there was rarely a senior, accountable person in the middle of it all whose only job was to keep the program honest. When that person existed, the work usually got done. When they didn't, no amount of ceremony saved it.

MS Business Solutions is my answer to that gap. I take on the engagements where that person needs to exist, and I do the work myself. It's deliberately a practice of one.

How I think about consulting

Four principles I don't bend.

You'll notice these in every engagement — from the first call to the final handover.

01. Write it down.

If a decision isn't in writing, it hasn't been made. Every recommendation I give is a document — with the trade-offs named, not hidden.

02. Name the trade-off.

Every option has a cost. My job is to make the cost visible, not to sell the option I prefer. You decide; I support the decision.

03. Work for the client, not the contract.

If the right answer is a shorter engagement, I'll say so. If the right answer is no engagement at all, I'll say that too.

04. Leave it standing.

Success means the client runs the program after I leave — with better artefacts, clearer governance, and more confidence than they had before.

Outside of work

The human bit.

I live in Craigieburn with my family. I read more business history than is probably healthy — Shoe Dog, The Everything Store, and anything Michael Lewis writes. I coach my kids' weekend sport, badly. On long flights I re-watch The West Wing.

I'm a believer that consulting is a craft best practised in public — which is why I write, not because it's "content strategy".

If the way I work sounds like what you need — let's talk.

A 30-minute call. You leave with at least one concrete suggestion, whether we work together or not.
